Editors’ Recommendations Indian Motorcycle’s 2020 Scout Lineup Pays Homage to Its 100-Year Legacy Mercedes-Benz has revealed its refreshed GLA subcompact crossover ahead of this year’s Detroit Motor Show. First introduced in 2013, the GLA helped define the tiny utility vehicle segment with what amounts to a lift kit on an A-Class hatchback. In the U.S., the GLA is the only way we kinda sorta get the A-Class, as Mercedes-Benz prefers to sell us the CLA subcompact sedan. No one’s really complaining though – the GLA is quirky, and the automotive world always needs more of that. For the 2018 model year, Mercedes focused on exterior and interior tweaks to keep the GLA appealing among a broadening group of competitors. Redesigned front and rear bumpers, new standard and optional wheel designs, the addition of Canyon Beige paint, and full LED headlights round out the exterior modifications. Inside, an 8.0-inch center display is standard, the instrument cluster has been updated, a rearview camera is standard, Android Auto has been added, and a new Black Ash wood trim replaces Burl Walnut. As for the GLA45 AMG, the same 2.0-liter turbocharged four-cylinder engine pumps out more power than any other 2.0-liter turbo on the market: 375 horsepower and 350 pound-feet of torque. A seven-speed dual-clutch transmission transfers grunt to all four wheels for a blistering 0 to 60 mph spring of 4.3 seconds. The 2018 GLA45 and CLA45 AMG cars are now available with an AMG Performance Studio Package (a.k.a “Yellow Night”). Included in the special edition is matte graphite gray paint with yellow accents, AMG sport seats with microfiber inserts and yellow trim, unique sill plates and floor mats, and AMG’s performance steering wheel. Nothing says sporty like neon yellow accents.Pricing for the Yellow Night edition and all other 2018 Mercedes-Benz GLA models will be revealed closer to their on-sale date this summer. Editors’ Recommendations 6 Classic Tequila Cocktail Recipes You Need to Know We recently embarked on a marvelous journey to Mexico City with Milagro Tequila, and it’s truly one of the most magical places we’ve ever been—which makes sense, as it’s also the inspiration behind the spirit itself. Between the food, the history, and the incredible art culture, it’s a vibrant metropolis that needs to be on your bucket list.Jaime Salas. MilagroBut one of our favorite things about Mexico City (or CDMX for short) is all of its amazing bars, whether it’s a cantina where the locals go after work for a Paloma or a world-class cocktail den.“Drinking is a sensorial experience for me that taps into the visual, auditory, textural, and aromatic, along with the flavor of what you are drinking,” says Jaime Salas, the national brand ambassador of Milagro. “Mexico contributes to your drinking experience by tapping into its rich pre-hispanic culture, biodiversity, creative aesthetic, and progressive nature.” Because there are so many great places to drink, we enlisted Salas to help guide us through CDMX’s vibrant bar scene and narrow down the watering holes you have to visit. If you’re looking to drink tequila in Mexico City, these seven places will treat you right.Fifty MilsMax Schwarz/The ManualThe Four Seasons Mexico City is one of our favorite hotels on Earth — if we had the chance to move in, we’d take it. Not only does it boast an incredible staff, fantastic dining options, and a world-class spa, but it’s also home to one of Mexico City’s best bars, Fifty Mils. “There are hotel bars, and then there are hotel bars!” Salas says. “Fifty Mils is ranked number 45 by World’s Fifty Best Bars, and rightfully so. Its cocktail program is one not to miss, but it’s the care with which they execute these cocktails that keeps me coming back. The staff is not only talented but warm and accommodating. They take pride in their cocktail creations, so I typically let them take the lead when suggesting what I should drink. I am never disappointed.”Hanky PankyMax Schwartz/The ManualIt’s difficult to find a true speakeasy these days. With all the information available on the internet, bars are rarely kept a secret for long. Hanky Panky is an exception to the rule. In fact, its Google Maps location is wrong on purpose, so you’ll only be able to find it if you contact them for a reservation. But the reward is worthy of the trouble. “This bar is cool, chic, and hidden (right behind an unassuming taco shop, no less),” Jaime says. “The décor is as great as are the cocktails, and the staff is warm and knowledgeable. You will need a reservation to get in, and it’s well worth it. Their agave cocktails are top notch, you can’t go wrong with anything on the drink list.” Ask for a Sour made with Milagro — it was one of our favorite libations of the trip.Maison ArtemisiaMaison Artemisia/FacebookIf you’re feeling a little homesick during your trip to Mexico City, Maison Artemisia is the cure. The lively spot is always filled with an international crowd, so you’re sure to meet some new friends on the dance floor. “This cocktail bar is set in a 19th-century building and resembles a parlor from that era, but the cocktails are as progressive as Mexico City itself,” Salas says. “It’s a small and intimate bar with rotating DJs and great cocktails. Come here if you want a cozy place to drink and chat while a cool soundtrack plays in the background.”XamanMax Schwartz/The ManualXaman is unlike most bars we’ve been to before. Think lo-fi house tunes and the scent of burning herbs while the bartender serves you deliciously potent drinks in some of the coolest glassware in town. “This basement lounge is sexy with a great crowd and equally impressive cocktails,” Salas says. “The name of the bar is a play on the word Shaman. Its aesthetic and cocktails are inspired by pre-hispanic influences and shamanism. They celebrate native agave spirits in cocktails that are more like potions than traditional cocktails, served in amazing vessels.”Limantour RomaLimantour/FacebookWe love Limantour because even though it’s one of the best bars in the world, the friendly, laid-back vibe will make you feel welcome, whether you’re a cocktail novice or have spent time behind the stick. Plus, they serve some of the tastiest bar snacks in the city. “Limantour is always my first stop when visiting Mexico City,” Salas says. “It’s ranked number 11 by World’s 50 Best Bars. This cocktail bar veteran continues to shine and reinvent itself in the ever-evolving Mexico City cocktail scene. It’s always buzzing with great energy and amazingly creative and über hospitable bartenders. It’s my home away from home — a must visit.”Café ParaísoParaíso/FacebookMexico City’s vibrant energy will put you in a dancing mood, and Café Paraiso is one of Salas’ favorite places to boogie. “Mexico City has a thriving nightlife, with tons of options from small dive bars to large nightclubs and everything in between,” he says. “Café Paraíso is one of my favorite late-night spots to dance the remainder of the night away. Shots of tequila or mezcal are in order here, complete with an amazing lineup of DJs fueling the already energized crowd. The door is tight, so plan accordingly.”Bar Oriente The 5 Best Margarita Mixes to Stock Up On Right Now Maestro Dobel Diamante Blends 3 Tequilas Into One 11 Best Gins for a Refreshing Gin and Tonic We love a good karaoke bar, especially when it boasts private rooms. And when the food and drinks are good too, we’re sold. “I’ve only been a couple of times, and Bar Oriente is quickly becoming one of my favorite late-night spots,” Salas says. “It’s a restaurant in the early evening that transitions into a dance party with live music, programmed weekly. This multi-level spot comes equipped with private karaoke rooms as well. It’s a great refreshing addition to Mexico City’s ever-evolving nightlife landscape.” 5 of the Best Aged Tequilas to Drink When the Weather Cools Down

Story Highlights Scores of students are now better informed about leading a healthy lifestyle, following their participation in a health fair, held at the University of the West Indies (UWI) Open Campus, in Kingston, on August 22.Staged by a group of public servants (Cohort 14) as part of their practicum for the Introduction to Events Management course, the event, dubbed: ‘Kingston 4 School and Health Fair’, featured free blood pressure and dental checks, as well as free eye tests.Team Leader for Cohort 14, Margaret Walker, toldJIS News that as public servants, the 16-member team decided to “use our collective networks and our resources to stage something that will give back to the community around the UWI Open campus.”Ms. Walker, who is also Consulting Officer in the Investment Facilitation Services Unit at Jamaica Promotions Corporation (JAMPRO), informed that the Ministry of Finance and Planning paid for the course which ran for five weeks. The team also partnered with the Jamaica Information Service (JIS) to stage the event, which also offered other services at a cost, such as immunization, medical and physical examinations for back to school. These services were, however, free for the first 150 students between the ages of five and six and 11 and 12.Producer, Writer, Presenter at JIS’ Television Department, Tamara McKayle, said the agency decided to partner with Cohort 14, “because of the fact that they are promoting a healthy lifestyle for our children.”“The JIS’ mandate is to inform and educate our nation about the policies and programmes of the Government, but also one of our objectives is to give back to the wider community and the Management felt that partnering with the back to school health fair is a perfect avenue to impart information to the children as they prepare for back to school,” she said.Ms. McKayle further informed that the JIS team talked to the students about practising a healthy lifestyle, “because so very often our students don’t eat right, they don’t exercise and that is a critical component.”“It is important of course to study your books, but it is also important to ensure that proper nutrition is taken care of,” she added. The JIS also gave away books during the event, courtesy of the Research Department, one of which included a recipe book that can help students to create nutritious meals at an affordable cost. In addition, the agency’s Special Projects team erected a booth that featured a number of posters and brochures providing information on healthy lifestyles and nutrition. The students also benefited from a feature on Jamaican heritage, courtesy of the Television Department, following which the students were asked questions and provided with prizes.Services were offered by the Registrar General’s Department (RGD); and the Programme of Advancement Through Health and Education (PATH). The health fair was held under the theme: ‘Back to School the Healthy Way’.Sponsors for the event included: Faboso Traders Limited, Eyeland Eyewear, Azan’s, LASCO, Food for the Poor, Stationery and Supplies, Kiwanis Club of Mona, LIME, Kingston and St. Andrew (KSA) Health Dept, JIS and Kentucky Fried Chicken (KFC). ‘Kingston 4 School and Health Fair’ featured free blood pressure and dental checks and free eye tests. Plans are advanced for the Tourism Product Development Company’s (TPDCo) establishment of a Craft Development Institute (CDI) at the Edna Manley College of the Visual and Performing Arts (ENCVPA) in Kingston under a Memorandum of Understanding between the entities. “The Craft Development Institute is meant to be a machinery that allows for individuals with a particular skill set to refine those skills and end up having their products in what we call artisan villages,” the Executive Director pointed out. Story Highlights Executive Director of TPDCo, Dr. Andrew Spencer, says the CDI is expected to be underpinned by an institutional framework that facilitates training for current and aspiring artisans while supporting the development and protection of their work. Plans are advanced for the Tourism Product Development Company’s (TPDCo) establishment of a Craft Development Institute (CDI) at the Edna Manley College of the Visual and Performing Arts (ENCVPA) in Kingston under a Memorandum of Understanding between the entities. The CDI is among several initiatives being pursued by TPDCo with view to growing the craft industry by providing artisans with opportunities to participate in product enhancement and business development training programmes.Executive Director of TPDCo, Dr. Andrew Spencer, says the CDI is expected to be underpinned by an institutional framework that facilitates training for current and aspiring artisans while supporting the development and protection of their work.“The Craft Development Institute is meant to be a machinery that allows for individuals with a particular skill set to refine those skills and end up having their products in what we call artisan villages,” the Executive Director pointed out.He indicated that five such villages are to be established in several of the island’s resort areas. The first, which is slated to be opened in 2018, will be located at Hampden Wharf in Falmouth, Trelawny, and will be developed in collaboration with the Port Authority of Jamaica. The second will be located in Ocho Rios, St. Ann, and will be developed in partnership with the Urban Development Corporation (UDC).Dr. Spencer explained that the establishment of the villages was proposed in the Tourism Sector Development Plan and the long-term Vision 2030 Jamaica National Development Plan, which called on the Government to develop attractions where locals and visitors could enjoy the total Jamaican experience through food, drink, culture and entertainment as well as art and craft.Dr. Spencer was speaking at a Jamaica Information Service (JIS) Think Tank session at the agency’s head office in Kingston on August 29.Meanwhile, Dr. Spencer advised that approximately 180 persons have benefited from training in craft enhancement and business planning. This, he said, as part of an 18-month craft-enhancement programme, which concluded in July 2016.The programme was implemented by TPDCo with funding support from the Organization of American States (OAS) and Tourism Enhancement Fund (TEF).Notable among the resulting outcomes was the transformation of the Ministry’s grounds in New Kingston into a mini artisan village to stage the ‘Christmas Village on the Breezeway’ last December. The extravaganza showcased and marketed handicrafts and other authentic Jamaican products made by 26 local artisans. Its staging was positioned as a precursor to the establishment of the proposed artisan villages.
Story Highlights Educators across western Jamaica are expressing optimism with the full rollout of the new National Standards Curriculum (NSC) for students in all grades for the 2017/18 academic year. The new curriculum is aimed at improving the general academic performance, attitude and behaviour of students. Giving his views on the curriculum, Principal of Herbert Morrison Technical High in Montego Bay, St. James, Paul Adams, says his teachers are ready for its implementation. Educators across western Jamaica are expressing optimism with the full rollout of the new National Standards Curriculum (NSC) for students in all grades for the 2017/18 academic year. The full rollout comes a year after it was implemented on a pilot basis in 49 schools for students in grades one to nine at the beginning of the 2016/17 school year. The new curriculum is aimed at improving the general academic performance, attitude and behaviour of students. It places direct emphasis on project-based and problem-solving learning, with Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics/Science, Technology, Engineering, Arts and Mathematics (STEM/STEAM) integrated at all levels. It also allows students more hands-on experiences that are similar to real-world situations, making the learning experience less abstract and more concrete.Regional Director for the Ministry of Education, Youth and Information in Region 4, Montego Bay, St. James, Dr. Michelle Pinnock, says she is excited at the implementation.“I am excited about the NSC, as it promotes the establishment of a learner-centred classroom. Teachers will be able to engage all learners, especially the boys, as they partner in teaching-learning activities that promote the development of 21st-century skills – collaboration, creativity, critical thinking, communication and problem solving,” she says.“This curriculum encourages the partnership of parents, students, teachers and the community. Construction of new knowledge through the integration of technical vocation will cause learners to appreciate new content as they connect and move from the known to the unknown,” Dr. Pinnock adds. She points out that work on the new curriculum started more than three years ago, and the Ministry of Education, Youth and Information engaged a number of teachers and other stakeholders.“The new curriculum will allow students to utilise their own talents and experiences in the learning process,” Dr. Pinnock says. She notes that Civics forms a major part of this new dispensation, while Technical and Vocational Education and Training (TVET) and Spanish have been formally introduced at the primary level. In addition, subject areas such as Geography and History have been separated from Social Studies and are being offered separately starting at grade 7. Chemistry, Biology and Physics have been separated from Integrated Sciences, and will be offered separately at grade 9.Dr. Pinnock says the changes are aimed at ensuring that the requisite foundation for the Caribbean Secondary Education Certificate (CSEC) in the disciplines is laid during the lower secondary years.Giving his views on the curriculum, Principal of Herbert Morrison Technical High in Montego Bay, St. James, Paul Adams, says his teachers are ready for its implementation.“We have been mandated by the Ministry of Education to implement the new standards curriculum and we have done our preparatory work and are ready. This will be a game changer for our students, and we are looking forward to the benefits which it brings,” he tells JIS News.Meanwhile, parents also welcome the new curriculum, which will further enhance their children’s academic potential.Charles Baker, whose son attends Cornwall College in Montego Bay, tells JIS News that the new curriculum “offers the students lots of avenues for growth and development as they look forward to becoming productive students and take on the rigours of external examinations. Our children will definitely benefit”.Another parent, Michelle Stewart, mother of a fourth-form student at Petersfield High School in Westmoreland, is very optimistic that the subjects and the focus in the new curriculum will ensure that more rounded and qualified students leave the nation’s schools.“The curriculum gives the students more opportunities to fulfil their dreams. I particularly like the idea of getting Civics back into the school, as this will bring our children into a better space to understand the value of knowing about their country, civic pride and good manners,” she tells JIS News.
The St. James Police Division is expressing satisfaction at how the Enhanced Security Measures in the parish have been progressing, particularly the impact in suppressing gang activities. Story Highlights “We have applied for 10 detention orders from the Minister (of National Security) to have some of these persons remanded in custody for an extended period of time. We also intend to apply for detention orders for a further seven who are in custody,” he explained. The St. James Police Division is expressing satisfaction at how the Enhanced Security Measures in the parish have been progressing, particularly the impact in suppressing gang activities.Authorised Officer for Detainees, Deputy Superintendent (DSP) Ainsley McCarthy, told JIS News in an interview on Thursday, March 1, that during the period ending February 28, a total of 916 persons were taken into custody. He said 65 of the detainees were charged for “various offences” and that 24 of the 916 still remain in detention. He said among those detained were 37 juveniles between the ages of 15 and 17, who were processed and later released by the Jamaica Constabulary Force (JCF).“Of the 24 persons that we have in custody, we have an interest in a number of them, who are in some way or another related to gangs,” DSP McCarthy said.“We have applied for 10 detention orders from the Minister (of National Security) to have some of these persons remanded in custody for an extended period of time. We also intend to apply for detention orders for a further seven who are in custody,” he explained.DSP McCarthy said since some of the detainees were taken into custody during the Enhanced Security Measures, there has been a noticeable decrease in gang activities and the “parish has been returning to some sort of normalcy”.He noted that at the beginning of the operations, “there were some opening guidelines for shops, bars, clubs, gas stations and other businesses, but those hours were reviewed and extended” and the Constabulary is “pleased with the results that we are seeing so far”.DSP McCarthy said the issue of overcrowding and other glitches that were experienced in the initial stages of the operations have been resolved, resulting in less persons showing up at the facility “in search of loved ones” who were detained.“At the beginning, there were some teething problems, as you would have at the initial stage of any development. That has been ironed out,” he said.Turning to other matters, the officer said the JCF is imploring members of the public who experience delays in traffic flow at vehicle checkpoints at the various parish borders “to be patient and just work with the security forces as they try to resolve the issues that had put St. James on the map in a negative way”.He also urged residents of St. James and other neighbouring parishes to “work along with the security forces” and ensure they report any new persons they see coming into their districts, as many Wanted Men “are trying to make their way into other districts as a means to elude the police”.“The security forces will be in your space for a period of time. See it as being a part of making you safe, making your community safe, making your parish safe and, by extension, making Jamaica safe,” he said. Authorised Officer for Detainees, Deputy Superintendent (DSP) Ainsley McCarthy, told JIS News in an interview on Thursday, March 1, that during the period ending February 28, a total of 916 persons were taken into custody.
